How to set up text-to-speech (TTS) in Discord voice

Let members type messages that Skipper reads aloud in a Discord voice channel, with per-server language, custom voices and length limits.

Text-to-speech is a small feature with a big payoff: members who can't or don't want to talk can still "speak" in a voice channel, and it's genuinely fun. Skipper reads typed messages aloud in voice, with plenty of control for you and options for members.

Where to find it

Run /config Category Miscellaneous TTS, and toggle it on.

Step 1: Choose where it reads

  • TTS Channel: restrict TTS to one text channel (leave unset to allow any). Skipper checks it has the permissions it needs there before saving.
  • Server Language: the default voice language, chosen from 24 options (English by default).
  • Max Length: how long a message can be before it's cut off (default 200, up to 2000 characters).

Step 2: Tune the behaviour

  • Auto-join: have Skipper hop into voice automatically when members join.
  • Ignore Replies: skip reading messages that are replies.
  • Blacklist: block up to five roles from using TTS.

Step 3: Let members personalise (optional)

  • Custom Nicknames: let members set the name Skipper uses for them.
  • Custom Voices: let members pick their own voice.

Both are off by default, so members can't personalise until you turn them on.

How members use it

With Skipper in a voice channel, members just type in the TTS channel and their message is spoken aloud. If you enabled custom voices or names, they can set those once and it sticks.

Tips & gotchas

  • If your chosen TTS channel is missing any of the bot's required permissions (Send Messages, View Channel, Send Messages in Threads, Read Message History), Skipper won't let you set it, so grant them first.
  • Max Length silently caps at 2,000 characters even if you enter more.
  • The behaviour toggles flip on a single click, so selecting one again turns it back off.
